Prostiva RF therapy (also known as Transurethral Needle Ablation or TUNA) is a non-surgical, in-office treatment for the long-term relief of BPH symptoms. In Prostiva, the excess prostate tissue is reduced through targeted low-level radio frequency energy that produces heat. The shrinkage of this tissue allows the patient to urinate more normally.
Prostiva patients typically experience a significant reduction in BPH symptoms, such as the frequent need to urinate during the day and night, a sense of urgency to urinate, and low urine flow.
What to Expect
Prostiva RF therapy is performed in a urologist’s office under local anesthetic and typically takes less than 30 minutes. In the procedure, the doctor inserts a small tube into the patient’s penis and passes it through to the prostate. RF energy is delivered directly into the prostate with two small electrodes at the end of the tube. This reduces the excess prostate tissue that is causing the BPH symptoms. During the procedure, the doctor will typically treat several sites within the prostate until enough sites have been treated to relieve the symptoms.
Patients typically wear a catheter for several days after the procedure to allow the prostate to start healing but can return to normal activities within a few days of the treatment. Any minimal discomfort after the therapy can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications.
Improvement in BPH symptoms may not be realized until 8 to 10 weeks after treatment when the patient’s body has reabsorbed the treated tissues.
