The UroLift System is an ingenious and innovative approach to treating an enlarged prostate, or BPH. This minimally-invasive option lifts or holds the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way so it will no longer be blocking the urethra. It does not entail cutting, heating or removal of any prostate tissue and is performed under local or sedation anesthesia. UroLift has revolutionized the treatment of BPH because of its brilliant unique design, ease of use, and reproducible results
According to clinical data, the UroLift System (which was FDA cleared in 2013) safely and effectively relieves lower urinary tract symptoms resulting from BPH without compromising sexual function. By relieving the symptoms, patients are able to get back to their lives and resume daily activities almost immediately. What sets UroLift apart from other minimally invasive devices is its extensive clinical data with consistently reproducible outcomes.
In BPH, the enlarged prostate can narrow or potentially block the urethra. During the UroLift System treatment, a urologist inserts a delivery device through the obstructed urethra to reach the prostate. Tiny implants are then delivered through the delivery device and are permanently placed to lift or hold the prostate lobes apart- similar to how tiebacks hold open window curtains. This relieves obstruction of the urethra and allows urine to flow normally.
Treatment of BPH includes everything from drug therapy to invasive surgery. The UroLift System offers a number of inherent advantages for BPH sufferers including:
- The procedure is minimally invasive and requires minimal recovery
- No catheter or overnight stay is typically required.
- Sexual function is preserved, unlike alternative BPH treatments such as TURP, laser, and even medication.
- Symptom relief occurs as early as 2 weeks after the procedure
- This is intended as a permanent implant with clinical data showing durability to at least 4 years, with additional reports expected as follow-ups continue.
- Allows for retreatment. If desired or needed in the future, the UroLift System does not preclude retreatment or the employment of other BPH treatments going forward.
Candidates for the UroLift System include individuals who:
- Don’t want to take a pill every day
- Are dissatisfied with the side effects of BPH medication
- Would like to avoid major surgery and its associated risks and complications
- Desire to preserve sexual function (erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation)
